In collaboration with Netflix and under the superb creative direction of Matthew Bennet, we brought 1980s Hawkins to LA. I wrote an entirely new narrative, full script and two-hour pre-show podcast (for the superfans!), which fans listened to via their car radio broadcast as cast in COVID masks mimed.

With just a five-month design sprint from conception to opening, this project required a dynamic, efficient and highly collaborative approach to get the job done. My input culminated in a fever dream of a month writing, re-drafting and iterating under the watchful eye of the Stranger Things showrunners to get the show just right in record time.

The experience, a car safari around a 10-story car park in downtown LA, was the only large-scale event to proceed in the entire US during autumn 2020.

  • "The Script was super fast-paced and the voices well captured"

Greg Lombardo, Head of Experiential at Netflix

  • “Bells’ ability to adopt tone and cadence and then sprint with it into entirely new formats of comedy is quite remarkable. In rehearsals, when we had to listen to their scene played back dozens and dozens of times, it just got funnier and funnier. I'd recommend Bells as a writer, creative and highly adaptable whirlwind every day of the week.”

Matthew Bennet, Creative Director at Secret Cinema

  • "The dialogue between Steve 'The Hair' Harrington and his snarky co-worker Robin was hysterical...the juxtaposition of the two bickering and tripping, while trying to save themselves and humanity, was hysterical."
